Roosters & Chicks!

17 Sep 2012

What's Blooming Today?

I finally finished my All Cooped Up quilt.  All Cooped Up is designed by McKenna Ryan of Pine Needles. This quilt was really fun to make.  I used invisible thread to Machine appliqué and I used beads and embroidery for the eyes.  It is the first time I used the pattern in the background fabric as my quilting template.  I also used a variety of colors of WonderFil's Konfetti and Tutti threads.  I love these threads!

McKenna Ryan shows the patterns as individual quilt blocks and a quilt with only 4 of the 7 Roosters/chickens.  I wanted a quilt with all 9 of the roosters/chicks so I had to figure out a way to put them all together.  I tried McKenna Ryan's idea with the chicken coops but I just couldn't get them to work.  I finally settled on cutting 2 1/2" wide strips of various lengths of the leftover scraps and created a border.

Next came the quilting the borders.  After some thought, the idea of chicken foot prints would be perfect.  I googled images of chicken foot prints on the internet.  I hadn't realized that chicken feet are a delicacy and that there are "100 ways to cook chicken feet"!  I didn't have any luck finding a pattern on the internet so I took a pencil and paper and worked it out.

I love the way the quilt turned out.

FWS Blocks 5 and 6

05 Sep 2012

What's Blooming Today?

Today's Blog is short and sweet!  I finished two more blocks for my Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt.  Almost there - only 105 more to go!

Block 5 - Bat Wing and Block 6 - Big Dipper.  As I work through the Farmer's Wife Sampler blocks, I'm starting to wonder where the names of the blocks comes from.  Maybe someday, when I have time, I will research the naming of quilt blocks.

Happy Little Lanterns

30 Aug 2012

What's Blooming Today?

I wanted to give everyone an update on my Happy Little Lanterns quilt that I started in May.  I've finished embroidering the second block and sewn it into the second row of the quilt.  I embroidered this one a little differently and I like it much better than the first.  So much so, that I seriously considered doing a new one for row one.  I have 3 more blocks to embroidery and I'm afraid if I decide to redo the first one, each time I embroidery another one, I will want to go back and redo the ones I've already finished and sewn into the quilt.  At that rate, I would never get done with the quilt!  This quilt is from a free download pattern from Lecien and the fabrics are Kate Spain's Good Fortune from Moda.  To see the first one, visit my May 16, 2012 Blog posting.

FWS Blocks 3 and 4

23 Aug 2012

What's Blooming Today?

I've finished two more blocks for the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt.  At this rate, no telling when I will get this quilt finished.  I'm keeping track of when each block is completed--not sure if I really want to know how long it takes to complete - actually, how long it takes to complete any quilt.  For me, it is not how long it takes to finish - it is the process (the journey) of making a quilt. But, I am keeping track in a spreadsheet and I am also writing the date on the inside of the block with a fabric marker.

Here is block 3, Basket.  I'm trying not to fussy cut because I think that would cause me to use more fabric than I want to and I decided that in the grand scheme of things, it won't matter.  But check out the bird in the upper right hand corner--sometimes things just fall into place.

Here is Block 4, Basket Weave.  I can't believe how much trouble I had with this one!  I used foundation paper piecing.  I know what you are thinking--it is just sewing 1 1/2 inch strips together.  How hard can that be?  Well, I used paper piecing for the experience.  This is the first quilt I've tried paper piecing on and I'm just trying to learn all I can about the process.

By the way, be sure and visit The Quilting Garden this week during Web Shopper Appreciation Days. Come see what's on sale--everyday a new category! Also, don't forget to stop by the Bargain Shed where you will find discounts up to 40%.  Plus, fabric at $4.50 a yard.

Hugo and Friends

15 Aug 2012

What's Blooming Today?

I would like you all to meet Hugo and his friends, Fatcat, Felix and Scruffy.  Can't you just see, by their smiling little faces, how much fun they are having in the wagon being pulled around the park by Hugo?  I'm sure they are heading for the big tree with lots of shade!

This is block 2 of the A Dog's Life quilt pattern.  See block 1 in my June 20, 2012 Blog posting.   A Dog's Life quilt pattern was designed by Lynette Anderson from Australia.  There are only 4 blocks in this quilt.  You can get your pattern at The Quilting Garden.
